The Woodhull Community Band: “Music is Passion, Not Perfection”

Woodhull Community BandThe Woodhull Community Band was founded in 2012 by Kathryn Davis Knowles. The band held its first rehearsal on Saturday, September 22, 2012 with 10 playing members in attendance. The band held and continues to hold weekly practices. Many of the members dusted off their instruments after a 50-year hiatus from playing. Today the band has 47 playing members. They range in age from 10 to 84 years old. The members come from all walks of life and travel from several surrounding communities to play with the band. Beginners to more experienced players sit side by side and learn from each other.

The band held its first public performance at the Woodhull Community Christmas party on December 9, 2012. Since then the band has played 25 concerts which includes community events in Woodhull, Addison, Jasper, Lindley, and Canisteo. The Woodhull Community Band has performed joint concerts at the Prattsburgh Central School and the Tuscarora Elementary School. They have also played for a Service of Remembrance hosted by several of the funeral homes in Corning.  The band currently has 10 performances scheduled for 2015.

In 2013, the band made the decision to create its own logo and then adopted the former Woodhull School colors of orange and black.

The band’s motto is, “music is passion, not perfection.” Their goal is to have fun while learning new music, make each performance fun and entertaining, and encourage a life long love of music. There is a sense of family among the group. They are always ready to welcome new members.
